GREAT ARTICLE FROM GEORGE WILL IN THE WASHINGTON POST
George Will’s article today in the Washington Post highlights how the short term effects of sequester on the NIH budget will have long term negative effects not just on public health, but the USA’s ability to continue as the world leader in biomedical research.
Money quote: “Spending on basic medical research is being starved as the river of agriculture subsidies rolls on.”
Federal investment in research leads to longer and more productive lives, which drives GDP growth. Subjecting the NIH budget to the blunt force trauma of sequester budget cuts is poorly thought out and should be revisited.
