I was diagnosed (with NF1) when I was 13, initially I was really scared. I was also ashamed, because it made me realize I will have my struggles for my lifetime. It also gave me hope though, knowing the reason behind my symptoms gave me more options for how to help them.
Ever since I was a kid, it was my dream to be a Disney Princess, or Birthday Party Princess. Having a facial difference due to NF has prevented me from following that dream, as most agencies do not allow people with facial differences to participate. I also always struggled in school in math and science. I also experience chronic pain in the areas of my tumors.
(My defining moments were either) the day I decided I was beautiful despite my facial difference or the day I got into my dream school after working very hard after being rejected the first time. NF held me back academically for so long. Getting into my dream school because of my hard work and determination made me realize no part of NF can hold me back.
I’m a full-time preschool teacher and special education student! I love working with kids and my main goal has always been to make a positive impact on the next generation.
