I can recall very clearly the day of my diagnosis, although I was not told until later. One day, when my mother dropped a brush on my shoulder, I yelped in pain. She took me to the doctor and they found a large tumor in my shoulder. It was removed and subsequently I was was diagnosed with NF1. I can remember my mom crying in the waiting area of the hospital. From there, I was taken to the Cleveland Clinic for appointments every few years. My experience with NF1 has been smooth. My tumor returned 10 years later when I was 17 and since then, the progression of my NF has been minimal.
There has not been one particular (defining) moment in my experience as a person with NF1. I do remember kids making fun of my bumps and scars. I was also teased for being the smallest kid in the class. I know that dealing with low self confidence has been a life long struggle.
Living with NF has made me a more compassionate and tolerant individual. I learned very young to accept and love people for who they were and not judge people for their differences. I try not to let the fear of the unknown direct my future. I live every day to the fullest.
I am 48 years old, married to my husband for 22 years. We have two sons Alex and Jackson, they are 19 and 20 years old. I have been in the education field for 15 years and I have taught in both elementary and high school. Currently I am a high school special education teacher as well as a middle school track coach. I am a four-year breast cancer survivor. During my treatment for breast cancer, I took up running as a way to cope with the stress and I’ve been running ever since. I just completed my first half marathon. I am a member of the CTF NF Endurance Team and I will be running as part of that team in April.
