Neurofibromatosis, NF for short, is a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and affects all ethnicities, races, and genders equally. In addition to tumors growing anywhere in the body, NF may lead to blindness, deafness, bone abnormalities, disfigurement, learning disabilities, disabling pain, and cancer. NF affects 1 in 3,000 people and, while earlier this year, the FDA approved the first-ever treatment, Koselugo (selumetinib), for inoperable plexiform neurofibromas, it only helps a limited number of patients and there is no cure at this time for NF.
“I’m thrilled to bring together a passionate group of people dedicated to upping the ante in NF research, especially during these times when we have to be creative in finding ways to connect and support important causes,” said Dan Altman, lawyer and NF Dad. “Hosting this event for the past 13 years has given me tremendous joy, and I’m looking forward to seeing what cards we are dealt at this year’s event!”
“Together with CTF Board Member Dan Altman from New York, the planning committee and the CTF Junior Board, I am thrilled to be hosting this coast-to-coast event,” said Michael B. Silver, actor and relative of an NF Hero. “The need for research is great, and it’s wonderful to see so many people – celebrities, NF families, and supporters alike – coming together for an important cause.”
For every tournament buy-in from now through the event, and for every $25 donation, you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a :30 taped cameo with one of the celebrity card sharks. The clip will air during the Children’s Tumor Foundation May 17th World NF Awareness Day “Live” Event.
