In My Own Words: Sierra’s NF Journey

From Kara, Sierra’s mom: Sierra was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) at age 3. She had multiple cafe au last spots and no other indicators. She thrived as a child and didn’t need much medical attention until she was in her teens.

When I was in 2nd grade, I remembering realizing that not every kid went to the hospital in Denver for a special checkup. I had a tumor encroaching on my ear canal and had to have surgery to help me hear. That’s when I figured out that I had NF1, but that other [kids] didn’t.

I’m a college freshman studying psychology, hoping to work with troubled youth. I like creating art and enjoy being with animals. Last summer, I wrote and illustrated a children’s book about living with NF1 called Rascal the Raccoon’s NF Adventures. The main character is a cute raccoon named Rascal. The book follows Rascal to the hospital, on adventures with his family and to school. Children will relate to Rascal with empathy and enjoy the adorable illustrations.

I really needed a character like a Rascal when I was younger. I didn’t know what was happening to me. I want kids to know it’s not their fault and there is a support system who will get them through things — it’s important to know that you’re not alone.

Some of my tumors cause pain and I really struggle with math class. I’ve also had to have some surgeries. Other than that, I live a normal college freshman life in the dorms! My plans for the future include graduating college and becoming a therapist. I also love baking and plan to bake with my patients. Baking therapy:)

Fun fact about myself: I rafted the Grand Canyon for three weeks when I was 13 years old! And I have traveled to 6 of the 7 continents!
