We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Vincent “Vic” Riccardi, the world-renowned expert and pioneer in neurofibromatosis research, and past winner of CTF’s Friedrich von Recklinghausen Award. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.
Dr. Riccardi’s contributions to the field of NF research have been highly influential. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, he authored many seminal papers and books, shaping the understanding and treatment of NF at a time when few others did. As one of the first to truly establish the field, he laid the groundwork for modern approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of NF, significantly impacting patients’ lives and the scientific community.
As a pioneer in NF research, Dr. Riccardi was one of the first to specialize in this genetic condition, which causes tumors to grow on nerves in the body. His work laid the foundation for modern approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of NF, impacting countless lives. He founded The Neurofibromatosis Institute in 1980 and was a co-founder of the Texas Neurofibromatosis Foundation, as well as established a top clinic where patients received care and support.
Dr. Riccardi’s commitment to the NF community extended far beyond his research. His accessibility and dedication to helping others, from patients and their families to emerging researchers in the field, exemplified his character and deep commitment to the NF community.
As a mentor and a friend to many in the field, Dr. Riccardi was instrumental in bringing more people into NF research. Many of today’s leading experts in NF consider Dr. Riccardi the reason for their professional paths, a testament to his influence and generosity as a mentor. He offered his insights freely, providing invaluable assistance to researchers as they pursued their work.
In recognition of his unparalleled contributions, Dr. Riccardi was awarded the Friedrich von Recklinghausen Award by the Children’s Tumor Foundation in 2008, the highest honor given by the Foundation. This award underscores his status as a legend in the field and honors his tireless efforts to improve the lives of those affected by NF.
“Until his most recent meetings, conferences and interventions, Vic was never short of out-of-the-box ideas, and many of those ideas have triggered intense discussions, new perspectives, and new lines of research,” said Annette Bakker, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of the Children’s Tumor Foundation. “Vic will be remembered for his resilience, courage and empathy for all those that suffered from NF. We are proud to dedicate the 2025 NF Conference to the doctor everybody admired. His creativity will be terribly missed.”
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Riccardi was a renowned pediatrician respected for his compassionate care and dedication to his patients. He was a good doctor, a good friend, and a good person, whose legacy will continue to shape the field of NF research and inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
