The White House released a report last week which analyzes at a high level the impact of the some of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) funding invested in “innovative and transformative programs”. This includes the $10 billion set aside for the National Institutes of Health to fund medical research. Pages 42-48 of the report gives a brief overview of how NIH funds were invested. Highlighted accomplishments are: expansion of The Cancer Genome Atlas to include broader cancer types; working toward a ‘cheaper genome’; and progress in autism spectrum disorder. Given the typical slow and intense march of science, it is likely that the impact of ARRA funding on medical research will not fully be seen for some time. As a reminder, we reported last year that neurofibromatosis projects gleaned around $3 million of ARRA NIH funds.
