April Setterlund ran the Marine Corp Marathon last year, along with her mother and sister. They did so for her nephew, Nathan, who was diagnosed with NF in 2016. These three women trained and ran the marathon as a tribute to his strength and the strength of all those living their best life with NF. We asked April to share a little more about her experience running the Marine Corp Marathon.
April, why did you decide to run the Marine Corps Marathon with the CTF NF Endurance team?
I ran with my mom and sister in support of my nephew who had 5 tumors removed from his head and spinal cord within 6 months of his diagnosis. He spent the days before his first surgery singing “I Wanna Be Sedated” by the Ramones with my mom. He had such a good attitude about it, despite the fear.
What kept you going during the toughest moments?
During tougher moments I just think of Dory from Finding Nemo, which was my nephew’s favorite movie when he was really little. “Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming…” except I switched swimming to “running.”
What was your favorite part of the race?
Running down Independence Avenue by all the museums. The energy was really great. There were a bunch of signs and people out supporting each other. It’s one of my favorite things about marathons.
Do you have any advice for NF Endurance athletes training for the marathon this year?
Remember to stay hydrated and focus just as much on the short runs as the long ones.
How does it feel knowing you are raising money for CTF and NF research?
Amazing! It’s awesome to come together with your family for such a great cause.
What was your favorite song to train to?
I don’t always take music with me, but if I do, I like running to things like “Beast (Original Mix)” by Onder Koffer or “Lose Yourself” by Eminem.
Anything else you want to mention?
Best of luck to those running this year! It’s a great cause and a great accomplishment! #EndNF
