Green Mountain Relay Spots are Going Fast

Leave the strip malls and billboards behind and join NF Endurance for the second annual NF Endurance Team Captain Summit in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Tracy Draper, the NFE team captain coordinator, has been busy planning this team event on June 17-20, 2010.

The 2010 gathering will take place in conjunction with the 200 mile Green Mountain Relay, an event designed for runners of all abilities.

Why Vermont and another Timberline event? “Because we had such an awesome experience with Timberline Events at the Wild West Relay last year,” said Tracy. “Some runners expressed interest in an ‘extreme’ or ‘ultra’ event and this race encompasses both.”

The course, running along Route 100, coalesces two-lane roads lined with maple trees, cornfields and covered bridges, for one of the most scenic routes in the country. If you didn’t have to finish a relay, you might just want to stop for a picnic as you pass mooing cows and weave through cornfields.

The relay consists of 36 legs with a 12-man team rotating through the roster, giving each runner three legs to run. The ultra team, composed of six runners, will complete six legs. For more specific mileage information check out www.greenmountainrelay.com.

The event will start on Thursday, June 17, 2010 when attendees arrive by plane, train and automobile at the Albany, N.Y. airport. The group will depart for Jeffersonville, Vt., in passenger vans and spend the night in a lodge. An icecream sundae party will help participants carb load for the 200 mile relay, and Philadelphia Team Captain Trisha Budlong will be the chef extraordinaire for the weekend. The relay begins on Saturday morning, and after approximately 36 hours on the road, NFE will cross the finish line in Bennington, Vt.

Are you up for the challenge? E-mail Tracy ((Enable Javascript to see the email address)) TODAY as there are only four spots left.

BE CREATIVE
Joe Ahrens is a school principal in the Atlanta area and also team captain of the Tumornators for the ING Georgia Marathon. Here are some of his creative fundraising ideas that he implemented at his school.

  • PJ Day – Several teachers on the team are holding “PJ or Comfy Clothes” days.  Students and staff can pay $1 to sport their lounge wear.  The PJ day at Ahrens’ elementary school on Monday, Feb. 15.,  raised nearly $400.
  • Volunteer to teach – Ahrens has volunteered to step out of the principal office and teach in a classroom for a donation of $50.
  • Shop With a Purpose – Ahrens connected with a local business to have a “Shop With a Purpose Day” and raised $75 for the Children’s Tumor Foundation.

SET A GOAL
How is that New Year’s Resolution holding out now? Here are some of our Endurance goals for the year…

  • Trish: “To lose some of the holiday pounds I added and train for a half marathon later this year.” She’s hoping for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon in September.
    Tip
: Take more care about what she puts in her mouth, and to take time, four days a week, to workout or run at least 45 minutes
  • Suzanne: “Exercising more and adding some light weightlifting to increase my metabolism.”
    Tip:
Grab a buddy. “When someone is waiting for you – it helps keep you on track.”
  • Beth: In addition to taking a power walk for at least a half hour each day, she wants to head to the gym too.
    Tip:
Puppy love! With her cute dog, Bella, begging for a morning walk, how can Beth say no?
  • Valerie: Eating healthy snacks.
    Tip:
Be a garden goddess! As Christina Pirello says, “Can you grow it in your garden? Then don’t put it in your mouth!
  • Molly: Get back to running 5k’s regularly and running 6-9 miles per week.
    Tip:
After signing up for some of her favorite 5ks, Molly plans to reorganize her schedule to run on her day off
*Did you know? Molly started with the NFE team in January and will be helping us with our marketing and plans for a team store!
  • Bob: Run one marathon each month so that he may reach 49 marathons before the 2010 Athens Classic Marathon on his 50th birthday.
    Tip:
It will be his ‘money run’ so he plans to have a goal of raising $50,000.
  • Emily: To run her second marathon this fall.
Tip: Keep a pair of running shoes in your car so you never have an excuse to fall behind in your training!
  • Tracy: Complete an Olympic Aquabike event.  “These were just sanctioned by USAT for 2010 and are catching on in popularity.”
    Tip:
Aquabike events are great for those of you who may have issues preventing you from pounding the pavement. Tracy hurt her back and has had to take time off of running. “This distance is approximately a one mile swim and 30 mile ride immediately following.”
  • Steve: His goal for 2010 and his 51st orbit of the sun is two fold:  He’d like to see this team generate 2000 healthy happy satisfied participants. . .and $2 million in revenue to end this dreadful disorder sooner than later.
    Tip:
To do all that while remaining, both physically and, perhaps more importantly, emotionally, healthy, happy and satisfied.

Thanks to more than 140 runners and volunteers this past weekend at Disney World, the event was a huge success despite many challenges thrust upon us.  From the magical snow in the wee hours of Saturday morning, to the rain, wind,  cold temperatures, transportation issues, etc., NF Endurance proved once again that we have what it takes to ENDURE. Just as our NF heroes have to face challenges day in and day out, our teammates had to truly had to reach deep within to push beyond their limits.  I must say that I am SO PROUD!  It is such an honor to meet, run with, visit with and work with such an incredible team.  Together we made a difference this weekend.  To date we have raised $109,415 and the total continues to grow as more contributions are being posted daily.  The active site will remain open through the end of the month. THANK YOU!
